単細胞遊泳性。細胞は上端が断ち切られた楕円形で扁平、細胞長 4-8 µm。細胞前端の端から２本の亜等長鞭毛が生じる。細胞前端には射出装置が一列にならぶ。細胞表面に縦の条線があるが、これが不明瞭なこともある。葉緑体を欠き、従属栄養性。

Goniomonas truncata (Fresenius 1858) Stein 1878 に酷似しており、しばしば識別は困難。ここでは海産の小形種をGoniomonas pacificaとして扱う (Lee & Patterson 2000)。
